Instructor Profiles

Chris has been training with the Sei-Bu-Kan group for over 30 years and has studied a variety of martial arts. His passion is Karate but he has also trained in Tai Chi, Kick boxing , Aikido, Krav Maga and Judo. Chris began training as a junior at Swaythling with Sensei Steve Doney & Sensei Bill Evans and currently still teaches there and at Eastleigh.

Chris believes that karate should be learned and taught as a pragmatic and dynamic art, and he has actively sought teachers and mentors who can help to enhance his knowledge in the deeper understanding of both modern and traditional aspects of karate-do in general and in Wado-ryu specifically. This includes the study of weapons systems including Sai, Tonfa, Bo, and Jo with Sensei Bill Evans, Ronnie Colwell, Trevor Streets and Hayashi Ryuji. Chris has also studied a wider variety of self protection and martial arts, training with instructors such as Geoff Thompson and Peter Consterdine. Chris has achieved success in national sports karate, competing in many open competitions  all over the country.  Since then he has moved on to focus on the study of the more traditional and pragmatic art of kata bunkai under Iain Abernathy and he achieved his instructor status with Iain in 2010.

Chris is currently further broadening his knowledge of martial arts, and has been studying Judo, attaining the grade of 1st Kyu. This learning is already enhancing the experience of students in Sei-Bu-Kan who benefit from his depth of knowledge and experience.

Quote from Iain Abernethy (Iainabernethy.com)

“Chris Marshall has been a regular at my seminars for many years and is one of only a handful of people to have completed an instructor’s course with myself. Never one to rest on his laurels, Chris is always looking to learn and further himself. This is obviously of great benefit to all those who train under him. If people are looking to practise karate in an intelligent way, where the cutting edge is melded with a strong sense of tradition, then Chris is sure to be someone you want to train with.” – Iain Abernethy 6th dan.
